Entomologist's Cane
Late 19th century

A remarkable scientific instrument disguised as an elegant walking cane, this ingenious entomologist’s field tool is designed for the study and collection of insects in nature. At first glance, it appears to be a refined cane, but the top unscrews to reveal a meticulously designed set of accessories essential for fieldwork.

The cane extends into a telescoping pole with a cloth drop-down umbrella at the end, allowing the user to perform "beating"—a technique in which branches are gently shaken to dislodge insects into the catcher for safe examination. Inside the shaft, additional tools include a vial for specimen storage, a set of fine-point tweezers for delicate handling and broader tweezers for a firmer grasp. A vial containing pins is also included, facilitating the careful mounting of specimens for further study.
