This classic English secretary cabinet is adorned with expertly carved naturalistic elements that predominated the early Georgian style. The towering cabinet features a drop-front writing desk that opens to reveal a spacious writing surface and an array of compartments. Below, four lockable drawers provide even greater space for one's most important papers and correspondence, while behind the central, mirrored section, the interior is equipped with several bookshelves. The piece is surmounted by a broken pediment centered by a finely carved cartouche containing an armorial shield, designed in an asymmetrical Rococo fashion. The expert craftsmanship of such a complicated item required the skill and attention of the finest cabinetmakers, to which its high level of quality can attest. Finishing touches such as elaborate Rococo brass pulls, locks and carved bracket feet bring the design of this practical yet beautiful Georgian piece to completion.

The secretary bookcase, or secrétaire, was an innovative piece of writing furniture introduced in the early 18th century. For the wealthiest households, it proved to be the preferred piece of writing furniture. As the demand for these versatile furnishings grew, so did the level of craftsmanship and overall beauty. Secretaries such as the current offering soon became the focal point of the manor, serving as statements of culture and education.
