Based on the furniture and decor created during the reign of French King Louis XVI (1774-1789), the Louis XVI style experienced a comeback in the 1860s in Europe. This revival reintroduced a formal classicism to furniture with an emphasis on simplicity, straight lines and symmetry. The slenderness of proportion was once again favored in furniture, as well as classical motifs and understated luxury. Today, this elegant and timeless style remains highly prized.
