Greek Key Floor Lamp
Tiffany Studios
Dated 1907

This striking "Greek Key" floor lamp by Tiffany Studios showcases the innovative design and artistic mastery for which the famed studio is renowned. The lamp features a stunning mottled glass shade in hues of kelly green and soft ochre, with the signature Greek key pattern rendered along the bottom. The fluid geometric composition captures the essence of Tiffany's fascination with Greco-Roman decor, combining ancient symbolism with modern craftsmanship. A soft, undulating top of the shade creates a captivating interplay of light, while the downward turn of the bottom casts a bright green halo of illumination.

The striking "Greek Key" pattern that defines this lamp is a testament to Tiffany’s deep admiration for classical antiquity. Inspired by his travels to Pompeii at the age of 22, Tiffany drew from the geometric complexity and vibrant colors of ancient Greek and Roman design. The pattern, known as "meandros," is a visual abstraction of the labyrinthine path of the Meander River in Phrygia, symbolizing infinity and unity. The lamp’s luminous green and blue hues evoke the vibrancy of ancient frescoes, capturing the rich colors of antiquity. The shade rests upon a sturdy and elegant bronze Piano base.

A pioneer in decorative arts, Louis Comfort Tiffany was a visionary who revolutionized American glassmaking. His "Greek Key" motif became a hallmark of his style, reflecting his quest to fuse art, culture and nature in a harmonious blend. Tiffany’s passion for Greco-Roman motifs also influenced his grand "Quest of Beauty" pageant, which he hosted for his 68th birthday. The pageant, rich in color and grandeur, featured elaborate Greek key patterns that mirrored the lamp’s design, demonstrating Tiffany's commitment to celebrating and reinterpreting classical art forms.
